Modeling Jobs And The Irs
Modeling is a job, and it has the potential to make you a lot of money. The
IRS knows this too and they will want their share. When you acquire money
it’s called income and the IRS collects income taxes from you.
Modeling is a tiny bit different than the average 9-5 type job. At most
jobs you are likely to collect a check each two weeks and most of the time
you receive that check after having taxes taken out for you. Modeling is
different, as a model you are an independent contractor.
As an independent contractor you are hired as needed. So you don’t get a
check each two weeks, and when you do work your earnings are paid out
without having taxes held. You’ll have to pay those taxes owed directly to
the IRS yourself.
This might sound confusing, but it can be really simple. Let me explain…
As I said, models are independent contractors, which is different than being
an employee. An employee works for a company, and independent contractor is
hired by a company to perform a service.
So, an example would be this: the receptionist at a modeling bureau is an
employee, they have scheduled days they work from week to week and probably
get paid about each two weeks and the dollar amount they are paid is usually
a flat rate per hour. Taxes are taken out of their paycheck before they are
paid.
A model is an independent contractor, they might work with the agency, but they
are not an employee, they acquire money on gigs or jobs the bureau might find for
them, but they do not have to work any job they don’t want to work, and the
fee or dollar amount per job can vary from job to job. When they get paid,
no taxes are taken out of their check.
Another difference is as an employee you really can’t be discriminated
against for height, weight, age, etc… But as a model (and an independent
contractor), you will either be chosen or not chosen based partly or solely
on your looks.
The plus side of being an independent contractor is that you are your own
boss. Truly you are your own business. You can select the jobs you’d like
to work, but being your own boss has it’s own responsibilities. If you’d

Taxes are a part of business. To make doing your taxes really simple I recommend
you contact a CPA (certified public accountant). A CPA will be healthy to help
you comprehend the taxes you owe based on your earnings. A CPA will also
show you how to save money by showing you different ways to get tax
deductions.
When you make a living as a model you’ll make money, but there are some
expenses and these expenses are costs you can “write off” at the end of
the year. An example of a few write offs might be:
Printing photos and zed cards
Make-up
Taxi fares to and from jobs
Mileage on your car
Education, books, and coaching
There are dozens of other expenses that can be used as tax deductions, but
they can vary from state to state so it is always ideal to consult a CPA to
make sure your taxes are done correctly. Tax deductions are great for saving
you money. Let me give you an overly simplified example…
Lets state you attained ,000 in modeling this year and you had nothing to
write off (no tax deductions). If the income tax were 15% then you would owe
15% of ,000. So you would owe ,500 in taxes.
However if you attained ,000 in modeling and had ,000 in tax deductions,
then you’d pay taxes on the difference. So you’d pay taxes on ,000,
and 15% of ,000 is ,700.
*These are just examples. This is not given as tax advice. It is always ideal
to consult a CPA for proper tax advice.
So, you can see how tax deductions can save you money. I know it can seem a
little confusing. My CPA makes doing my taxes very easy. I supply my CPA
with all my tax paperwork, 1099’s, and receipts. She even sets up my tax
payments into simple quarterly payments so I don’t end up with a large lump
sum payment at the end of the year.
Here is a list of the paperwork you need supply to your CPA…
Any earning statements (W-2’s, 1099’s)
All receipts
IRS transcript
An earning statement will usually be mailed to you at the end of the year.
Usually you will get a 1099 form in the mail, maybe more than one if you
worked several gigs. A 1099 is a form that shows the income you have made,
but have not paid taxes on. You could also get a W-2 in the mail and usually
with a W-2 there have been some taxes withheld already.
Keep your receipts for expenses. I pretty much keep everything, and then
sort it out with my CPA. He or she will let you know what will or won’t
count as a deduction.
An IRS transcript is a form you request from the IRS that will show all of
the reported earnings. You don’t need your transcript, but I request mine
every year just in case I don’t get all the forms I need mailed to me. The
transcript will show everything that has been reported to the IRS and it is
the safest way to ensure you are claiming the correct income on your taxes.
I always think its superior to be innocuous than sorry.
Taxes can seem difficult, but by keeping yourself organized and working with
a good CPA your taxes will be a piece of cake.

Why You Must Keep Your Modeling Portfolio Current
It’s important for a model to keep the photos in their book or portfolio
current. Models that keep their portfolios current usually get more work. So
every time you get new photos whether from test shoots or tear sheets
you’ll add them to your book.
You only want to keep current photos in your book. As a general rule of
thumb a current picture is a picture that is less than six months old. So if
you have photos older than six months you might want to look into shooting
again soon. You want to keep your book looking fresh.
You’ll need to update your portfolio more often if you have changed your
look. So if you have cut or colored your hair you’ll need to update your
pictures. If you have gained or lost weight you’ll need to update your
book. Even if you haven’t changed your look, your photos could need
updating, after all styles and fashions change each season so even the
clothes you’re wearing in some of your photos can make a picture look
old.
The process of updating your book is never ending. The good news is that if
you are a working model your job will often times wage you with plenty of
current pictures. Basically each print job you book you’ll want to add
those new photos to your portfolio. Sometimes the photographer or client
will give you some of the images or if the photos are used in a entrepot or
printed in a brochure then just tear it out of the entrepot and place in your
portfolio that way.
If you haven’t booked any print work lately then your ideal bet is to
schedule a test shoot. Often times your agent can help you to find a good
photographer to get your portfolio current. You want your photos current
and you want variety, so you might schedule a test shoot with several
different photographers so you know you’ll have plenty of photos to
choose from. For more information and advice on modeling check out

In order to be successful as a professional model you need to have the right
tools. Your portfolio is your most important tool. Having a professional up
to date portfolio with photos that are an accurate representation of how
you look can make or break your career.
Keep your portfolio current and it will keep you working.

Modeling Job at The Fabulous Las Vegas Sign
A few months back I had the opportunity to work with an astonishing photographer.
Her study is Tracy Rasinski, and the concept was shooting at the Las Vegas
Welcome sign. We tossed ideas back and forth until we came up with a winner.
The theme is completely Vegas! The Vegas Sign with a Vegas Showgirl. We shot
just before sunset, and the photos looked amazing.
Now, you might be wondering how I got booked for this job. let me tell
you…
I’d normally state my agent booked me, but this time I was booked off of my
website. I actually have a few different website to book myself work from.
I don’t use mass modeling sites, there are too many models and to be honest I
don’t want to promote where my potential clients can select another model
with the click of a mouse. On my own site I have a captive audience. You
can have a site build for nearly nothing and with just one paid booking pays
for itself. I use fasteasysite.com, they do an astonishing job and only charge
me 99 bucks (ask for the “New Model Advice” discount). For more great
modeling tips visit americastopmodelingcoach.com.
Actually, this photographer didn’t just book me off of my site, but she was
referred to me from another photographer who saw my site, so having my very
own website prefabricated it all possible. Anyway, lets get back to this job.
So, we met up with the makeup artist in the late afternoon, then I got into
costume and we headed down to the sign. Now, this wasn’t a studio shot,
clearly we were on location and it was not a private set. So we had to move
our turn and I have to admit we did draw a lot of attention. We had two
assistants there to help with crowd control.
Now not only is Tracy an astonishing photographer, she is also great at
photoshop. If you aren’t familiar with photoshop, it’s a personal
program for altering photographic images. You can spot good photoshop from
bad photoshop pretty easy. When it is done well the overall image is the
same, it has just been enhanced, things like color correction, contrast,
maybe removing a flaw or two.
As I stated this was not a private location so when the final picture was
selected there was someone in the background. Using photoshop it was simple to
remove the extra mortal and have a perfect shot. Now it’s a great
addition to my book (every good model knows you’ve always got to be adding
and updating to your book).

The Modeling Industry
If your interested in the modeling and/or entertainment bussiness read this before you deside to start/commit.
Well first let me introduce myself im 16 years old, i play volleyball, and i have been modeling for about 6 months. and live in southern california
So when you first think of the modeling bussiness you either think one of two things
1) Agencies convince models to pretty much be anorexic and most models are.
2) or that, that was the past and now all sizes and shapes are welcomed because of how our society has changed from the past.
When I first became interested in modeling it was because even though I had a lot of self esteem already, I wanted to maintain it/or acquire more. I also thought that since people told me I had a great look and that i should look into it, that was another reason i should try it, and also i thought i would be sucessful in this bussiness. Not as a serious job just a side job.
So before I could get an agency, most of the agencies require you to have taken previous classes to you have experience as in any job. So I took my classes as John Robert Powers. Now before you make assumptions about how JRP is a rip off. Please note that it is a TALENT bureau which means they train you NOT get you jobs. It was quite expensice 3 classes which were 20 hours apiece for about 3000. Anyway so I took the runway class and gained a lot of experience. I also had a request that I should get professinal pictures done because they thought i had a lot of potential to go somewhere. So I got my pictures done.
I was contacted by an bureau who was interested with signing me and i only had runway experience, No acting, photoprint, or commercial. Now this is where opinons about agencies come out. Althought they SAY they will accept all shapes and sizes now, thats Bull Sh*t.. They told me that at normal weight I would be consitered a petit plus model and wouldnt make sh*t and only was interested in signing with me if i were at their requirements. Now i know you might be thinking that the bureau was some small one that was a scam, but it was Elite. Elite has many levels of models so i wan’t going to be one of the main/popular ones on the website or anything. I was 5’8 and weighed 138 that means my bmi was 21 which is low on the scale of average wieght. When you meet with the agent you bring your professinal pictures and resume. They would go over my pictures and with a red marker circle all the parts of my body that he consittered to be “fat”, i guess what wasnt skin and bones. He wieghted me and stated I had a lot of potential and wanted to sign with me. He told me he would sign with me when i completed my other 2 classes over at JRP and when i lost 12 pounds to be down at 125 at 5’8.
Now at the time i didnt consiter my self fat. I am smart girl and was eduacated about intake disorders and knew that if i ever came close to deveopling one i would just stop modeling or go to another agency. Everyone at school thought i had a great body and so did i. So when i started to loose the wieght i obviously knew i wasnt fat and i was just doing it to get into the agency:Elite. Now i know loosing wieght is hard for most people, but when your already normal weight its extremly hard, and most of my wieght was muscle since i play volleyball. I stuggled but eventually go to 130. I became concerned with exerciseing and counting calories(im an psychoneurotic person). It got to the point where if i gained a pound i would be soo upset crying and messed us. I started weighing myself each morning, intake a 1000 calories a day, when im suppose to take 2500 because i play 3 hours of vball a day. so one night i ate a cup of cover cream and freaked out so i tried to throw up and i tried to stick my finger down my throat, but wasn’t healthy to purge. So i have realized that i might be developing an intake disorder even though im not under wieght(130) but im concerned with my wieght. The industry is really hard and cold i dont advocate becomeing a part of it if you have a “normal” or “athletic” body. If your already super tall and realy skinny then its fine, but its still a commitment. I have distanced from my friends and have become quieter becuase i have lower self esteem then before and am constantly thinking about food. I would quit except for a couple reasons
1) Im still enrolled in 2 classes
2) my parents payed money for lessons
3) and ive already been through so much i dont think i could stop dieting if i wanted to
Another thing you should know before you begin is if you interested in commercial or acting or modeling gigs you superior not have a busy schdule and place school frist. They might call you on at 10 pm on a wed night and need you to drive 6 hours in the morning the next day. So you can t go to school. This happened to me when i got a small role as a cheer leader in the next Bring It On Movie.
Thanks for reading i hoped you got something out of this.

Mathematical Modeling For Kids
How wonderful would be the class where children are speaking about models for addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. Mathematical Modeling being a very fundamental necessity, though lately realized, should be practiced and taught right since primary education.
More than actual modeling at such an primeval stage, it would be highly encouraging to have students thinking on these lines. At a later stage when they actually have to handle complex problems, it would be on their finger tips on how to examine the inputs, outputs and parameters affecting the inputs and outputs.
In this article, I have focused on how to instruct unconventional methods along with conventional learning methods to trigger the learners’ mind towards understanding and exploration of Mathematical Modeling.
Starting with an example, once addition is taught in a standard way, there are ways of thinking addition symbol “+”as a Mathematical Model for adding the two numbers.
Now, lets state “addition” is being introduced to a kid who is learning it for the first time.
Since he/she would be knowing counting (assumed), lets do it this way, state we want to add two numbers 3 and 4. Addition is a box, in which we place these two numbers and it gives another number which is sum the two numbers fed to the box.
The question is what this box does ? ? ? Well that’s where we build what do we have inside the model.
1. Lets say, it takes the first number, it draws those many number of lines. Then it takes another number, draws those many number of lines, and then add all lines (because this addition model assumes that the mortal who is building it, knows counting) !!! . And you give the final count, and study it as output. Can you believe introducing a kid to “inputs” and “outputs” when he/she has just started learning addition.
2. Now, state you want to introduce addition of two digit numbers. For example 23 and 36, same procedure, define our old box, but yes this is an upgraded model now, because if this model is calculating like the “kid’s addition” model then, perhaps its going to take a lot of time.
So, here we expand the horizon, for example:
a. Standard Addition model: We place the standard convention method that is taught in schools into our this model.
We add the digits at units place, (using the model for single digit addition), see if anything is carried, nothing then add the digit on tens place, and we are done.
The output is thrown out of the box.
b. Split Addition model: We split the numbers themselves. 23 = 20+3, and 36 = 30+6, and now we can use our model of single number digit addition.
The intent is at this stage you know how to use a model inside another model. Vow, not bad !! Ok, at this stage, we can introduce the concept of verification of a mathematical model. So, for verification we first need to have the result which is right and then compare our models’ output to it. So, lets think about the conventional method taught by our instructors is the right one and produces accurate results. So, we use our model and compare the results. We do have many complex models for addition, wherein in my methodology, I believe Vedic addition is also a model for addition “+”. So, we expand the horizon of learning at this stage itself.
Similarly, after teaching models of subtraction, we can introduce verification models. For example “Digit Sums” is a good verification for the answer.
So, lets switch over to an example of multiplication model.
Now assuming that the learner knows counting, lets state our “kid” model, where in state 5 X 6 is read 5 times 6, that is the model draws 6 lines, 5 times, and count all the lines and gives the output.
At this stage itself, we can have some very interesting models, one I read it in “Left Hand Brain Mathematics”, I call them drawing models of multiplication.
We know that children are very crazy about drawing boxes, circles and what not. So, why not exploit their talent. So, lets make this circle:
M
Now, if we begin with our pencil on “3”, and begin the plateau of “3”, we begin with 3 times 2 = 6, stop at 6, then 3 times 3 = 9, drag to 9, then 3 times 4 = 12, so here since we do not have “12” on our circle so drag to 2 and write 1 infront of “2”, making it look “12”, similarly complete the table.
That’s wonderful actually because of Maths has a beauty and creativity inside it.
We need to give a spark of the Mathematical Modeling ideas, and they begin growing in child’s mind on its own.
Just to conclude, I would like to describe an experiment I performed in a primary school. I focused on Mathematical modeling ideas for a week to a group of students, and then I had a group of students of the same class from another school. I just asked them one question, and asked for an answer next day. Being an aeronautical engineer, I am lopsided in my questions J. The question was: There is an aeroplane on the Runway, how can you find its weight? J
Next day, I checked everyone’s sheet, now-a-days children are too strong at google, I was astonished to have a good data of weight of different aircrafts. Except for one, who had this on her answer sheet:
I was first shocked to see it, what did it really mean? On being asked to explain to everyone, the answer was “This is an aeroplane on the runway, and when it will pass through my box, it will find out its weight”. It was in fact fascinating as out of a group of 5 students, I was successful in imbibing a spark of mathematical modeling.
I strongly believe, that its just a thinking strategy needed right from the beginning to have a grasp of the mathematical modeling.

Why it’s easy to get modeling jobs in Las Vegas
Vegas are a place for models. There are so many modeling jobs here. Most casino and hotels only hire models. They like to hire pretty girls so they can keep their guess. They like to make it look happening. If you’re model material, you will get a lot of work here. They will hire you if you’re tall or attractive. You don’t have to necessarily be exactly a certain height or weight but you do need to look attractive. They’re mainly looking for captivating people. They like people who look good. In order to work in the casino you have to have good credit, and no background. They do check for background and credit and if you can’t pass it, they might not be healthy to hire you even if you’re just a model.
You get pay really good as a model. They will pay you anywhere from 0-0 per day. You get minimum remuneration and tips but the tips go pretty high. You get a chance to make a lot of money. The job is simple too. You just have to greet guess or serve drinks. You can also dance. They make you do two things at once. You are not just standing around. They’re hiring model bartender or model partner or model cocktail server. They’re hiring you for something. They’re not just hiring you for modeling alone. You have to do some regular work too but it’s usually easy. It’s not hard being a server or a host.
You will need your health card and your tam card in order to work. They will need these in order to comply with say laws. It’s a long process before you get hired. It’s tough in Vegas. You will need to pass three interviews and then be trained to do your job. You will also need to have a clean background check and clean credit history. If you have bad credit they might not hire you. If you don’t deal with money, they might not take it seriously but if you work on the casino floor they will take it seriously even if you don’t deal with money. It’s a depressing thing and that’s why Vegas’s unemployment rate is really high. It’s really bad here too. The casino will not hire anyone without at least one year of experiences. This is why it’s really bad. You have to have experience as a server, host or bartender if you want to do those jobs. If you don’t have experiences, you have to begin at a low level and then work your way up.

How do I get started in Modeling? – PART 3
Test Shoots – You Need Pictures
Whether you are working with a modeling bureau or working freelance you will need photos – photos for your composite, portfolio, and web presence. With a modeling agency, they might try to help you find test shoots. Working independently, you will have to track down your own test shoots.
Test shoots or testing has become a generic term for photographic shoots where a model acquires photographs to use for the model’s promotional materials. I will elaborate on this further on.
You have two basic goals when doing test shoots. One is to get good calibre photos as fast as you can to begin getting work. The superior calibre (more professional and creative) photos you have in your portfolio the superior paying jobs you will get. The second is to get experience in front of the camera and learning how to find your way around a studio or location shoot.
Test Shoots – Advice for Models
My definition of a Test Shoot (also refereed to as a photographer’s test shoot and Time For Prints [TFP] shoot) is when a photographer wants to try out a new creative idea, test some new equipment or film, wants to build the photographer’s portfolio, or just wants to practice and figure out how to take pictures, he sets up a pic session. In the case of a fashion or people photographer he needs a warm body to place in front of the lens. This is where the volunteer model comes in. This can work out well for both parties. The photographer does not want to pay for a model and the model does not want to pay for a photographer, so by trading services both get images for their portfolio and acquire experience. In some cases the photographer might give you a couple of prints for your services, in other cases you might have to pay for prints. In all cases you will not get the original and don’t even ask to borrow them.
There are several problems you will find with this arrangement. A beginning photographer might be hot to do test shoots, but he or she is still learning, so the calibre of work might not be that good. You might end up with just so-so prints in your portfolio. In some cases they might forget to take the lens cap off or some other technical problem so you might end up with nothing (of course that can happen to a pro actuation the limits also). In the case of seasoned professional photographers, they are often too busy with paying jobs or burned-out on doing new-model tests to do any test shoots. Thus it might be hard to find someone who is capable of producing good work and wants to do a test shoot with a new model. On the occasion when a seasoned photographer has a burning desire to do something new and creative, he usually turns to a model he already knows and with whom he enjoys working. So for your first goal of getting calibre photos fast, free test shoots might not be the ideal route.
Is it bad or a total waste to do a test shoot with a beginning photographer?
No. When you are starting out any chance you have to get in front of the camera and see some results is valuable. It is a chance to acquire some experience, try new make-up, poses, expression, wardrobe, and see how the photographer sees you. And once in while you and the beginning photographer might even hit upon something that will produce an outstanding photograph. It seems to happen more by happening then design, but sometimes neat things can happen. For a model this ‘learning by doing’ is the ideal teacher. So you can build a portfolio by this approach but it can take a long time. But it does help to accomplish your second goal of gaining experience.
If you are lucky, you might be healthy to find an advance amateur photographer or a pro who is getting back into model shooting. In either of these cases you have a shooter who has the capability to produce good work but might not hit it on the first try. The photos they produce might not always be top tier shots but would give you good photos to begin your career. This situation gives you good calibre photos, very fast, for tiny money, and the experience of working with someone who knows something about the business. These types of shoots can also be the hardest to find.
This information applies to fashion models, life style models, and commercial models. If you are seeking adult glamour modeling, you it will be no problem finding free test shoot once you learn where to look for them.
Warning
This is where the warning should come in when looking for test shoots. There always seems to be these “semi-pro” photographers out there. These guys are more then willing to do test shoots with new young models. These guys are more interested in hanky-panky than in producing a great photograph. At some point they want to get your clothes off or they are all over you like an octopus, saying they are trying to show you how to pose. Now this is different from very young, starting photographers who just have violent hormones. They are most likely just looking for a date rather than anything lecherous. In either case you will not end up with any usable photos for your portfolio. This is where professionalism on both the model’s and photographer’s part is needed. And they take photos or movies of you undressing without you knowing.
The Model Release
As you begin to do pic shoots the need for a model release will come up. .
Finding Free Test Shoots
If you sign with a modeling bureau they might already have a list of photographers that need that warm body to place in front of the camera. The bureau might have checked out these photographers and feel they are of a professional calibre that the bureau can recommend. In some cases, even with an agency, you might be on your own to track down test shoots.

How to take it further with modeling
It’s great to get into modeling. It’s not the easiest field that there is out there. You suffer from a lot of problems like traveling, keeping shape, harassment and so forth. There was one model who jump out of her building because she couldn’t stand criticism. Yes, it’s very difficult being a star out there. If you do have it all naturally, you can make it in that world. If you don’t have the body or face, it’s superior that you try another career. It’s all about looks when it comes to modeling and most of the work is dedicated to model looks, meaning you have to be around six feet tall and have a gorgeous face.
There are modeling for plus size too or modeling that are for other body parts like hair, hands, feet or just print modeling. Of course, there are plenty of ways to model but most of the works are for tall and beautiful models. There are also models for plus size, young age, old age and ethnics women too. There is a demand for models out there. The entertainment industry is the ideal industry of them all.
The jobs are all around you but some of the most famous industries are in New York or Hollywood. You want to go there since most of the jobs are there. They’re also online looking for you. They don’t like to go far to find you. They want to find you right where you are. You should open as much online profile as you can so you can model and let them discover you. When it comes to modeling, it’s all about your appeal to the public and whether you can sell a product or not too. It’s not always a blank, beautiful grappling but a grappling full of appeals in each single way. They want uniqueness in Hollywood. They want a grappling that people can comprehend and like. It’s important to not be too robotic or mechanical with your art because modeling is an art and it should be natural and beautiful.

How do I get started in Modeling? – PART 2
Modeling Bureau Contracts
There are three styles of contracts that you typically will run across. Some modeling agencies will work with exclusive contracts. This means that they are your exclusive representatives and they get a commission on any work you do. They get this commission whether they find the work or you find it on your own. If you sign this kind of contract; be sure the bureau is really going to be working for you. If they are providing a lot of guidance getting your career started and are out there beating the bushes to find work for you, this type of contract is fine. If the bureau signs you just to fill space in their roster and then leaves you hanging in limbo for the length of your contract (usually one to two years) it can be a bad way to try and begin a career. Another type of contract is a non-exclusive modeling contract. In this case if the modeling bureau finds you work, they get paid their commission. If you find work on your own you pay them nothing. You are free to sign non-exclusive contracts with other modeling agencies. This way you might have several agencies representing you at once. Now don’t anticipate the same service and help from a non-exclusive bureau as with an exclusive agency. In smaller markets, where you are expected to wage all of your training, portfolios, composites and other marketing materials before an bureau will work with you, signing an exclusive contract is a kind of a rip-off.
The final contract is a Mom Bureau Agreement. I have not seen one of these so I am not sure how they make it legally binding but you do hear about them. In this case the modeling bureau knows there is not enough work locally to support any one over the long term. Their position then is to move you on to a major market and get you signed with a major modeling agency. They might get you work locally but it is more with the intent of getting you ready for the major market. For helping prepare you and helping to place you with a top modeling agency, they get a percent of your earnings for a long time to come. You, in essence, never leave the mom bureau – you are just loaned out to the top agencies. This can be an captivating arrangement if the mom bureau invests time and money in your career and gets you on with top money making agencies. The trouble comes when this gets attached to a modeling school. You not only have to pay for all of the classes, the pic shoots, the career guidance session; you then must keep paying these people again for doing nothing. You need to analyze these agreements very carefully before you sign.
What does it take to
be a Professional Model In the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s a female model had to be about 5′ 9″ and a certain dress size. Men were something like 6 foot and a 40 regular. Of course you had to be beautiful. The reason for this was that fashion manufacturers prefabricated dress and suit samples in one size and it was easier to find a model in that size than to make a sample in a different size. As the plus sizes and petite sizes arrived and super models of varying sizes came on the scene, these old rules had to change some (but not much). At the same time the “fashion look” for a season changed as to what is considered beautiful. One season the look is anorectic drug addict, the next innocent and medieval. I don’t think the classic beauty look has been in since the middle eighties. In the secondary fashion markets, the look that might be needed can vary even more. When it comes to commercial modeling, size, look, and age can vary wildly. In a secondary market the more you can vary your look rather than having “a” look, the superior your chances of finding work. So, ultimately, it all comes down to three things:
1) Having the look that someone needs (generally the client) for the project they are working on at that time,
2) Making life easier for the art director and the photographer so they will want to work with you, and
3) Making sure the client, photographer, and art director know you exist and want to work.
The first has a lot to do with what you inherited genetically (your looks and talent) and what you have done with them. The second and third are where being a professional model comes in – knowing what to do and how to market yourself. When a project calls for someone captivating to stand next to a new product, the mortal who can constantly look good in front of the camera, show the emotional expression that is needed on cue, show up on time and leave on time and in so many other ways make the shoot go quickly, efficiently, and successfully, is the mortal who will get the job. That is also the mortal who gets asked back the next time. The part after the genetics is what I think about makes a professional model.
Guide lines for what it takes to be a model.
Well, all the above is fine but does not give much to go on, so do you have what it takes to be a model? The first thing you have to think about is what type of model do you want be? If you are trying for high fashion modeling, the runways of Paris, the cover of Vogue, etc., the stipulations are stricter. If you are hoping to do commercial modeling (such as product or lifestyle) there are much broader requirements. If you want to be a glamour, or pin-up model, it has its own set of requirements.
First Thing to Understand
All modeling, except for some glamour, is client driven. There is no need for a model (or for that matter, a photographer) until a client has something to sell (a product, service, or idea). At this point, the client becomes willing to part with the dollars to accomplish his/her income goal and a model is hired. It is also the size of the potential sales’ goals and the model’s importance in those goals that determines how much a model is paid (hourly fees and usage). Some types of glamour and stock lifestyle modeling can work differently as the pic itself has a value and the buyer can be found later. So, when we look at different types of modeling we are looking at different classes of clients. As an example, the Fashion Industry has become very dependent on using models in its advertising, promotion, and income material.
So let think about the job market when considering types of modeling projects and if you can make a living as a model. In a massive marketplace like New York there is an enough work in a given category of modeling that a model can specialize. A model can be just a fashion editorial model or fashion catalog model or even a plus size model or a hand model and be healthy to make a living. In smaller markets one would have to be more versatile to make it. When look at jobs and who can make it as a model I like to view it as a pyramid. The pyramid represents all of the jobs acquirable for a given year and the shape is formed by the stipulation for the jobs. The massive base is prefabricated up of standard fashion jobs, commercial modeling jobs, and the massive numbers of other job where they want someone who “looks like a model”. Only models who fill the Standard Fashion model stipulation (tall, thin, and beautiful) will fill these jobs. As we move up the pyramid and the job pool gets smaller we get to the Plus Size Beautiful models and the Petite Beautiful model. There are fewer fashion jobs acquirable but one can still find commercial jobs (you are of course competing with standard size models for these jobs but size is less important) . As you move further up the pyramid to the Plus Petite Beautiful models and the Older models, the job possibilities get smaller still. And at the top are the Special Beauty, “Real People”, and Special Character models. At this top of the pyramid are the jobs that come up once in a blue moon, but are great for modeling schools and model searches to give as examples when giving their pitch that anyone can be a model.

Modeling is a tough career
Modeling is a fun career but it’s demanding too. Modeling is exciting but you have to keep in mind the demands and the pressure from behind the scene. You have to read some of the real stories from models to comprehend how much pressure they have from their job. If you’re going to oppose a career in modeling, you have to keep in mind all of those things. You have to have a strong say of mind before you can handle the runway. There was a story of a model who jumped out of a building over harsh criticism. The staff behind the scene isn’t always friendly either. I used to have a model friend and she told me that it was far from a friendly career. If you’re strong and love your career then you might survive. Modeling is nearly the same as being an person or a singer. You get a lot of media attention and some of it can be dreading or upsetting. They might follow your each move if you become famous. You will become a celebrity. A celebrity life is nice but there are all sorts of pressure that goes along with it too. One of the pressures is to stay in top shape and look good all the time which can be very hard if you have a family or children. You have to keep all of these things in mind when you’re thinking about modeling. I used to have a friend who stated that she rarely eats anything beside apples and coffee. You don’t get to take a lot. If you do eat, you have to work out all the time to keep in top shape.
One sports illustrated model had a hole in her heart and she quit modeling. She stated that she would never grant her children to be a model. It’s too demanding in that you have to diet and work out all the time. There is a pressure from men and colleagues. The media picks on you all the time. You have to do a lot of traveling too. You might not like the intent of leaving your family and be on the road all the time. You have to be away from your family. It’s hard to rest as a model. You can’t take out a bowl of cover cream and curl up with a movie. You rarely get to enjoy food or just let go of your looks. The real demand is on the fashion show and the staff behind it. They might comments on your looks or you’re modeling style and it can be stressful. You have to take a class on mental coaching in order to survive all of those harsh criticisms. People that are in the industry aren’t always ethical or supportive.
Have you heard of all of the criticism towards Heidi Klum from one of the famous fashion designer lately? It was very harsh. If you’re naturally thin and beautiful then you might get by with the demands for being fit and pretty. If you have to work out all the time to keep in shape then it’s not a good intent to try modeling. There are different kinds of modeling and not all of them require that you are tall and thin. You can do print modeling or television modeling where they don’t require that you are thin and tall. television and print ask for a more one-of-a-kind look and you might be healthy to fit in with those medium. Modeling is harder than acting. Actors don’t have to be tall or thin. They a be short and chubby and still be healthy to make it in the industry. If you’re ever frustrated with modeling you should try acting instead.
