Healthy Food For Children at School
Schools are slow to join the fight against childhood obesity, and the National School Lunch Program continues to serve the same unhealthy dishes from previous decades: full of calories and low on nutritional content.
Initiatives
Change has taken the form of initiatives with the goal of bringing more inexpensive and nutritious options to students crossways the country. National School Lunch Program
The National School Lunch Program has systems in place to assist over 101,000 schools with free or reduced price meals to lower-income students. These machines are vending machines customized to dispense hot food by using an internal microwave to heat up packaged refrigerated meals as they are bought by apiece student. Tips on Car Design Courses in School
Dear friends,
this day I write some tips about Automobile Design courses. Each time I receive an email from you asking about Transportation Design courses I often am asked about Math and Mechanical Engineering, this type of questions come mostly from students in India or Middle easterly countries.
I am writing about vehicle design courses to make it clear that in Transportation Design schools it is not a mandatory stipulation to have knowledge about Mechanical Engineering or Math and the reason is simple: we study to become vehicle designers not engineers!
I have tendency to believe that this type of thinking is related also to local culture, example: in Italy some 20 years ago (when I started to work) people thought that to be a vehicle designer or an industrial designer you had to get an Architecture bachelor. So in India I believe the culture is still actuation in the Science environment to pass first by Engineering Universities before going to Automobile Design courses.
In a precedent hub I explaned why this is (for me) a mistake going against a normal vehicle designer student career development. The disciplines are completely different, the time and age to get a job, the confusion about extremely technical knowledge that is not a priority when we begin in vehicle design.
What do we study in a vehicle design school?
In general programs are very similar from school to school, but there are some activities that are a must for any kind of good design school program and they are:
– 4 fundamental steps: learn the basics of drawing, learn how to draw cars, learn how to make a project, Virtual reality including 3D modeling.
– learn about methodology and discipline ( what, how, timing )
– cultural knowledge like: theory of structures, modeling, vehicle history, benchmarking, portfolio, presentations…
I can comprehend someone coming from Engineering thinks that in Automobile Design there is a demand of technical lessons, at the same time the vehicle designer job has its most important key points in: creativity, skills in 2D and 3D, project management and design strategy.
Envision that even today, after 22 years of career, I find engineers that still do not comprehend why we have different priorities compared to them. Recognizing Gifted Students And Enabling Those With Special Needs At The High School Level
In Kauffman & Hallahan (2005), the controversial notion is contended that the definition of giftedness is quite controversial. In part, this is true because giftedness is often thought to be defined by IQ, and intelligence testing is controversial. Should aspects of intelligence be lumped together or split apart. There are concerns of educators to determine how or when to refer gifted and talented students. These students that are gifted and talented are often forgotten or excluded. Kauffman and Hallahan (2005), say many people in our society do not have much sympathy for gifted students may, in fact, resent them or adopt that if they’re so smart they can take care of themselves. Another problem is the development of curriculum for these students (in math, science, music, and others) are exposed to instruction that is boring and uninteresting to keep them involved.
No one should be excluded because of these issues. Many schools are focusing on students in the general population. This general population is doing fair; but there are plenty other needs to pay attention so all students can succeed. These students are restless, bored, and under challenged. This population is not given the rigorous curriculum to create higher level thinking. But these problems must also be focused on the above average student as well. A problem we grappling this day is the academic stipulations for gifted and talented students. Not only does this group demand the curriculum; but the say does not ask or seek assistance from eligible educators on how to set stipulations to challenge and help these students achieve at the highest doable level.
Lara Alecio’s ‘The problem of tackling class-related educational activities’ (ISBN 97854-958-1-323, Schiel & Denver Book Publishers, 2001), indicated that because no federally mandated policy exists for programming for students designated as gifted and talented, educational policy at the say level is muddled, at best, in relations to students who are gifted and talented—and who furthermore are codified as minority in some way. Programs for gifted and talented students are not a priority to the say governments. Actually, schools are not sure what students are getting in the general population, so gifted and talented students are not even thought about in the education at the say level. Programs for gifted and talented students need to be considered by the principal so they can work to help implement and design a curriculum for these students.
The principal must be sure it is doable to work with the district policymakers on producing a program. This policy development must cover all potential consequences or outcomes shown through data input to the context of the say or district that serves this population. For example, I have worked in a middle school, where the principal designed a program for gifted and talented students and had positive accomplishments on this level. According to Lunenburg & Irby (2006), policy development and implementations should include an examination of the impact of apiece of the following components upon apiece within a say or school: (a) the inventory of outcomes or consequences of identification, (b) a model program design that is sensitive to the population being served, (c) type of instructor training, (d) ongoing staff development, (e) parental involvement and training, and (f) needs-based curriculum and instruction. There are a few schools that have curriculum models for the gifted and talented. Here are two, used in the elementary schools: Enrichment Triad Model and Creative Problem Solving. On the secondary level, these two programs, well known, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement. If you are aware and know your child is gifted and talented, ask your district or school what programs they have for your student.
If a instructor has students that are gifted and talented, not many of them change or challenge the curriculum for these students. Some instructors might not be told that a student is gifted or has a higher than average accomplishment level. Because of this, many of these students get bored, disruptive, and make no effort to do their work or learn. For example, a sixth grade student I have known was not your “usual” student. By this I mean his performance in the classroom was over the teacher’s level. This student would speak through the lesson knowing the topic and giving answers without any thought he was disrupting the class. This student learned through a different style of learning. He would draw, listen, and be healthy to think faster than the other students in the classroom. This learning style fit this student and keeps his thinking active and ahead of others students in the class. Because of this type of learning, he is not healthy to maintain interest and place out the effort to do his work in the conventional learning style.
Instructors were treating him as a disruption and constantly on him for demand of no cooperating and doing their work. I believe many instructors are not told about the programs the district offers for gifted and talented students. This can injured students if instructors are not aware of programs in the school, because students will be over looked. Effective top notched instructors will be healthy to find what can be done for students that are gifted and talented. Instructors need to figure out how students can approach learning by doing the same subject but at a higher level than the curriculum teaches. This learning would be more rigorous and in-depth for achieving subject knowledge.

Westtown School
History
Westtown School first opened its doors in May, 1799. It was founded by Philadelphia Quakers who wanted to preserve and pass on to their kids the beliefs that were central to them. They raised the money to build a boarding school and bought 600 acres of land in rural Chester County—a full day’s coach ride from Philadelphia—where they could wage a “guarded” education in a healthy environment away from the secular influences of the city. For many years Westtown was almost self-sufficient, with the campus providing raw materials used in construction of its buildings and food for the people who lived and worked at the school.
Although they had separate classes until about 1870, the education Westtown offered boys and girls was much the same even in the primeval years of the school, reflecting the Quakers’ belief in the equality of all people. Students studied reading, penmanship, grammar, mathematics, geography and science. Boys learned practical skills such as surveying and bookkeeping, and girls had sewing class.
The rolling hills and farmland on which Westtown School was—and still is—situated lent itself to many hours of exploration and recreation for the students and teachers. Camp suppers, hiking, birding, sledding, and cover skating on the pond were among the activities enjoyed by students. One young student, Samuel L. Allen, who attended Westtown from 1852-53, never forgot the joy of coasting down the snow-covered hills at Westtown. While working in later years on sled designs for his manufacturing company, Allen sent models to be tested on the hills of Westtown. One of these sleds was the Flexible Flyer, patented in 1889.
The 1880s brought great physical changes to Westtown. The main building was replaced with a structure designed by architect Addison Hutton, which was finished in 1888 and is still in use today. During the 20th century, the student body and the curriculum both became more diverse. Visual and performing arts were added, for example, and non-Quakers, African-American, and international students were admitted. Westtown’s commitment to service became more explicit with the creation of the Work Program and Service Network.
In the 21st century, Westtown has put renewed emphasis on environmental sustainability. Westtown facilities now include buildings utilizing geothermal heating systems and solar panels to offset electricity costs, for example, and school cars are powered by biodiesel. The school supports community-based agriculture by dedicating a percentage of its 600 acres to farmland, some of which supplies produce for its dining room. The new position of Environmental Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for developing new initiatives, including curriculum, that reflect the most current thinking about how to live responsibly on the earth.

Does homework have effects on kids learning in high school?
The other day I was thinking of ideas for my college speech class and I thought of an crazy intent that children really don’t need homework to be good in school. As I was speaking to my college professor he started to think about the topic and thought that it really was a good fact and I should do some research on the topic. As I was looking into the intent i came crossways the intent that children really don’t do homework at all they spend about 10 minutes on school nights doing homework and less than 5 on weekends. Homework opponents argue, among other things, that homework does not necessarily promote good study habits in children. In some cases, for example, homework increases family tension, especially when exhausted and overburdened parents find themselves resorting to nagging their reluctant children into completing their homework.
Certainly, instructors should not be pressured into assigning homework simply because of societal expectations or only because it is the policy and practice of most formal school systems. Homework, however, has the potential to help a child do well in school if the assignments are meaningful, have a purpose and come with clear instructions. Parents might play a significant role by modeling a love of learning and by being lifelong learners. I feel as an overall mortal that children need to stop doing homework and should just focus on test. But, as a student i feel like homework raises my grade and if it wasn’t for homework I feel like my grade would be lower and wouldn’t be as high as it is right now. As I’m getting to the point people should just give up on homework, but I do really feel like it could go either way on the cases. Last, I just feel that we need homework but we just don’t need loads of homework, because i spend about 2 hours a night spending time on homework and studding for that huge chemistry test.

Reasons For Deciding On A Montessori School
There is a time when parents of small kids have to select where their child will begin school. I am an experienced mom as my son is finishing the second year in a Montessori preschool program which he joined when he was three and a half. I would like to share my experience of Montessori preschool education.
There were several reasons for my deciding Montessori. My son is an intelligent and an inquisitive child who was healthy to recognize numbers, shapes, alphabet, colors and numbers before beginning preschool and I thought he would get bored in a very conventional preschool. Montessori has a very individualized program which offers challenge to the kids making it more interesting. My son being an active kid needed a lot of outdoor and indoor activity which was acquirable in a Montessori program. It gives freedom to stand, move around, or lie down when doing lessons in the class.
According to me, the biggest benefit of a Montessori is that the child propels the experience of education. The program is customized to the capabilities and interests of the child and the lessons will not be the same for all kids and this grants them to become enthusiastic and motivated students.
There are more advantages of the Montessori education program and the experience has math, arts as well as language, life skills and science. My son actually impresses our family and friends regularly with his familiarity with science, sign language, etc. which are generally not a part of any preschool program.
There is another thing which I like is that his class has kids of different ages and there are some who are younger while others are older. He enjoys being in touch with the uncomplicated age students who are role models as well as friends.
There are many other benefits which I like in the Montessori programs like life skills. Students are supposed to be responsible for their individualized hygiene and also the cleanliness of the place where they take and the classroom. There is support from older kids and adults, small kids learn to clean up the mess they make. This has helped my son to be willing to help at home.
Some time back I compared my sons experience with a friend whose child is doing his second year in a preschool which is considered to be the top program in our community. This comparison of kids skills was prefabricated on the checklist given by our school district and had 60 skills, such as listening, cognitive skills, fine motor skill, language skills, sequencing skills, social/emotional skills and gross motor skills which help kids move up to kindergarten. My son had all of them while her son was absent in several of them.
According to me all parents must think about Montessori for their kids as it has a more child-centric learning method which will give a very good base for the future of the child.

Of course in USA there are many options to educating our children. There are public schools, private schools, charter schools, Montessori schools and, of course, the option of home schooling. There are suggests of both home schooling and public schooling. Those of us who don’t home school, which is still the majority of Americans, need to fully comprehend the reasons why people select to home school their children.
Religious or Philosophical Convictions:
Religion is not permitted in the public schools. Many families feel that belief needs to be a larger part of their child’s education than that which the public schools allow.
People who have deep religious beliefs show great passion. These are the individuals who are passionate about their children’s education and feel that only they are healthy to instruct them to the ideal of their capability and the content that they feel they should be learning. The home schooling parent is in charge, they call the shots and they like it that way.
Socialization:
Some people that don’t comprehend home schooling believe that it is confining rather than socializing. But those individuals that believe that are stuck in thinking about the stereotypical socialization of an age-based classroom. Kids that are home schooled are exposed to social situations in a blended age range. They have “age-mates” instead of “class-mates”.
Many home schoolers feel that their kids need to be exposed to the appropriate ways to behave not inappropriate. They feel that their child should be exposed to the model behavior of people who have learned to make decisions and handle themselves in various social settings. By being exposed to appropriate modeling of social behavior, home-schooled kids will learn how to act appropriately.
Parents of home schooled kids can also see when their child “gets-it” when they model for a younger child appropriate behavior.
Home-schooled kids get a reality based social lesson. On a regular basis they see adults they know, love and trust manage and equilibrise life day to day. These are real life situations that home schoolers are exposed to and public school kids are often sheltered from or are privy to a controlled school environment
Academics:
Home schoolers have several advantages over publicly schooled children. The curriculum is designed specifically for them – not for kids their age and what kids at a particular age are expected to know and learn. Public schools differentiate instruction the ideal they can. However, a home-schooled child has a curriculum plain to their needs. They might read at a 4 th grade level, spell at a 3 rd grade level and complete math at a 6 th grade level.
A home-schooled child is neither rushed nor not given enough time. There are no other kids to “keep busy” so they are free to work at their pace and move as swiftly or as slowly as need be.
Much research has been done on how kids learn best. A home-schooled child is not only taught by the mortal who knows them ideal in the entire world but also since they are the only student, the learning style never has to be varied. If a student learns ideal through music, then the curriculum of a home-schooled child can be plain to meet their needs so they will be more successful.
Home-schooled kids get to spend more calibre time as a family. They are not trapped in a traditional school setting for 6 hours a day but are free to spend calibre time as a family each day.
It is stated that parents are a child’s first teacher. Families that home school want to continue to be their child’s instructor because they feel that their kids need the guidance of their family and God and not the guidance of someone hired to do a job that is naturally theirs from the day their child was born.

Should Your Child Attend a Single-Gender School?
Recently there has been an increasing interest in single-gender schools. There are several benefits to this educational model. Research indicates that both male and female students experience greater academic success and they experience taking more subjects when they attend single-gender schools.
In coeducational schools, girls tend to shy away from non-traditional subjects such as personal science and math. One reason could be that girls who take such courses find themselves isolated in classrooms that are mostly filled with boys, and taught by male instructors who might even overlook them. Boys also grappling challenges in coeducational schools. Research demonstrates that fewer boys than girls, graduate from high school and attend college. Moreover, boys who struggle academically might display disruptive behaviors in the classroom to hide their demand of ability. “Feelings of inferiority promote disruptive behavior in classrooms, and predictably, boys exhibit many more disciplinary problems than do girls. These disruptions attract the attention of instructors who then prescribe special programs or classes to remediate the problem behavior,” (Flynn & Rahbar, 1994).
Single-gender schools recognize the fact that boys and girls usually have different learning styles and different needs. Moreover, single-gender schools help break down gender role stereotypes. Students are also healthy to focus more on academics without being distracted by or competing for the attention and affection of members of the opposite gender. Boys will not feel the need to act masculine and girls will not worry so much about their hair, make-up and wardrobe.
Of course not everyone supports the intent of single-gender schooling. Some people believe that girls and boys need to learn to socialize and work together in the classroom, so that they will have the skills to work together in the same companies during adulthood. Parents should decide what is ideal for their kids and make their decision accordingly. Some kids enjoy the learning process and receive a great education in traditional schools, but many kids will experience greater success in single-gender schools. Each child is different. Shy kids will probably feel more comfortable in single-gender classrooms. Boys who are interested in foreign languages and the arts are more likely to enroll in such classes at an all boys school.
A good education is the ideal gift that parents can give their children. Speak to your kids and make the choice that is ideal for them.
